Does CDB Pay Off? Understand Before Investing

If you’ve already heard of CDB but never quite understood what it is, how it works, or whether it’s really worth investing in it, you’re not alone. Many people still keep money in savings accounts out of habit or due to lack of information about other options — and CDB is, frequently, one of the first alternatives that appears when someone starts researching fixed income.

The problem is that the internet is full of superficial content, out-of-context comparisons, and vague promises of “much higher returns than savings accounts.” This confuses more than it helps. Before putting any money into any investment, the minimum you need is to understand what you’re buying, what the rules of the game are, and where the risks lie.

This article was written exactly for that: to explain CDB clearly, honestly, and completely, so you can make more conscious decisions — or at least ask the right questions.

What is CDB?

CDB stands for Bank Certificate of Deposit. It’s a fixed income security issued by banks and financial institutions. In practice, when you invest in a CDB, you’re lending money to the bank. In return, the bank commits to returning that money with interest after a specified period.

It’s a way for banks to raise funds to finance their own credit operations — such as personal loans, financing, and business credit.

CDBs are traded directly with banks, brokerages, and investment platforms. Today, with the popularization of fintechs and digital platforms, it’s become much easier to access CDBs from different institutions, including smaller banks that often offer more attractive rates to raise funds.

How does CDB profitability work?

CDB remuneration can follow three main formats:

Fixed-rate CDB

The interest rate is set at the time of investment. You know exactly how much you’ll receive at maturity — provided you keep the investment until the final term.

Post-fixed CDB

It’s the most common type. Profitability is tied to an index, usually the CDI (Interbank Certificate of Deposit), which closely follows the Selic rate — the basic interest rate of the Brazilian economy, set by the Central Bank. A CDB that pays “100% of CDI,” for example, yields approximately the same as the CDI for the period.

Since both the Selic and CDI vary over time, the actual return of a post-fixed CDB is only fully known at the time of redemption. To check the current Selic rate, consult the official website of the Central Bank of Brazil.

Hybrid CDB

Combines a fixed rate with the variation of an inflation index, usually the IPCA. Example: “IPCA + 6% per year.” It works similarly to some Direct Treasury securities.

What are the advantages of CDB?

  • FGC Protection: The Credit Guarantee Fund protects funds invested in CDB in case of bankruptcy or intervention by the issuing institution. The limit is R$ 250,000 per CPF per institution, with a global ceiling of R$ 1 million per CPF every four years. For more details, visit the official FGC website at fgc.org.br.
  • Accessibility: Many CDBs can be contracted with low initial amounts — some platforms accept applications from as little as R$ 1. This makes the product accessible for those just starting out. If you’re taking your first steps, also see how to invest 100 reais per month.
  • Variety of terms and rates: There are CDBs of short, medium, and long terms, with different profitability profiles. This allows some flexibility in choice.
  • Availability on digital platforms: It’s possible to compare and invest in CDBs from different banks on a single brokerage platform, without needing to open accounts at multiple institutions.
  • Predictability (especially in fixed-rate): For those who value knowing in advance how much they’ll receive, fixed-rate CDB offers that clarity.

What are the risks and disadvantages?

Transparency is essential. CDB has positive points, but also limitations that need to be considered.

  • Credit risk: If the bank issuing the CDB fails before maturity, the FGC steps in — but the reimbursement process can take time. Also, the FGC has limits. Amounts above R$ 250,000 per institution are not covered.
  • Liquidity: Many CDBs have a lock-in period — that is, you cannot redeem the money before maturity, or you lose part of the return. Always check the terms before investing. Do not apply to CDBs without daily liquidity funds that you may need in the short term.
  • Income Tax: CDB earnings are subject to Income Tax, following the regressive table of the Federal Revenue. The less time the money stays invested, the higher the tax rate:
Application Term Income Tax Rate on Earnings
Up to 180 days 22.5%
From 181 to 360 days 20%
From 361 to 720 days 17.5%
Above 720 days 15%

This table is established by the Federal Revenue. To check if there have been updates, visit the official website at gov.br/receitafederal.

  • IOF in the first 30 days: If you redeem the money in less than 30 days, Financial Operations Tax (IOF) also applies, which starts at 96% and decreases to zero on the 30th day. It’s another reason not to use CDB as an immediate emergency reserve.
  • Return is not guaranteed in practice: In the case of post-fixed CDBs, the return depends on CDI variation. If the interest rate falls, the return also falls. Never treat past returns as a guarantee of future returns.

CDB versus savings account: what to consider?

This is one of the most common comparisons — and most poorly made. Savings accounts have specific return rules defined by the Central Bank, which vary according to the Selic level. To understand how much savings accounts currently earn and compare with other options, check our article on how much 1000 reais earns in a savings account per month.

What’s important to know is that savings accounts are exempt from Income Tax, while CDB is taxed. This changes the net return calculation. In scenarios of high interest rates, CDBs paying close to 100% of CDI or more tend to outperform savings accounts even after the tax discount. But in low-interest scenarios, the difference may be smaller — or even favorable to savings accounts, depending on the term.

The correct comparison is always made on net return, that is, after taxes and fees.

How to evaluate a CDB before investing?

If you decide to analyze a CDB, consider the following points:

  1. Who is the issuer? Research the financial health of the bank or fintech issuing the security. Prefer institutions regulated by the Central Bank.
  1. What is the rate offered? Compare with the current CDI. A rate of 100% of CDI is different from 80% of CDI. The lower below CDI, the less attractive — unless there’s some differentiator.
  1. What is the term and liquidity? Check if there’s a lock-in period and if it’s possible to redeem before maturity. Never apply money you may need in an option without adequate liquidity.
  1. What will be the impact of Income Tax? Calculate the net return considering the rate corresponding to the investment term.
  1. Is the amount within the FGC limit? If the sum of your investments in that institution exceeds R$ 250,000, part of the money will not be covered by the guarantee fund.
  1. Is the platform regulated? Make sure the brokerage or bank where you’re investing is authorized by the Central Bank or the CVM. Check official registries at bcb.gov.br and cvm.gov.br.

Conclusion: Does CDB Pay Off?

Does CDB Pay Off? Understand Before Investing - Conclusion: Does CDB Pay Off?

It depends — and that’s the honest answer. CDB is a legitimate, regulated, and accessible product that can make sense within a fixed income investment strategy. For those seeking something more predictable than variable income, with FGC protection and returns tied to the economy’s interest rates, it deserves attention.

But there’s no perfect investment. CDB has taxation, may have low liquidity, and carries credit risk from the issuer. Knowing these characteristics is not a reason to avoid it — it’s a condition to use it intelligently.

Before investing in any financial product, organize your finances, build your emergency reserve in options with daily liquidity, and understand your own objectives and timeline. Only then evaluate if CDB — and what type of CDB — makes sense for your situation.
