How to Increase Your Credit Score the Right Way

Do you know what your score really represents?

If you’ve ever tried to get a credit card with a decent limit, finance a car, or even rent a property and faced rejection, you’ve probably heard about credit score. This score, which typically ranges from 0 to 1,000 at major Brazilian credit bureaus, functions as a “financial behavior grade” that institutions use to estimate the risk of default before granting credit.

The problem is that many people still believe myths about the score: that paying off old debt raises your score immediately, that checking your own CPF “tanks” your score, or that there’s some magic shortcut to reach 1,000 points in weeks. The reality is more complex — and more honest than that. Increasing your score consistently takes time, discipline, and understanding how the system actually works.

In this article, you’ll learn how the score is calculated, which actions really move the needle up, and which practices don’t work — or even hurt. The goal isn’t to promise quick transformation, but to offer a real and sustainable path to improve your financial health and, as a result, your score.

What is a credit score and how is it calculated?

Brazil’s credit score is calculated by companies called credit bureaus — the main ones are Serasa, SPC Brasil, Boa Vista (SCPC), and Quod. Each has its own methodology, but all analyze a similar set of variables based on your financial history.

In general, the factors that most influence the score include:

  • Payment history: paying bills on time is the highest-weight factor. Delays, even small ones, have a negative impact.
  • Time in the credit market: the longer and more positive your history, the better.
  • Current debt level: using a large portion of your available credit limit can signal risk.
  • Diversity of financial products: having a checking account, credit card, installment credit — and using them well — contributes positively.
  • Recent CPF inquiries: many inquiries in a short period can indicate you’re seeking credit urgently, which raises the perception of risk.

Since 2021, the Positive Registry — regulated by Law nº 12.414/2011 and managed by the Central Bank — is also part of the equation. It automatically includes your on-time payment history in your consumer profile, not just defaults. This was an important advance: before, only “negative marks” appeared; now, paying well also counts in a structured way.

Pay your bills on time — always, without exception

This is undoubtedly the most impactful step. There’s no score strategy that compensates for a history of recurring delays. To financial institutions, your recent past is the best predictor of future behavior.

Some practical tips:

  1. Set up automatic payments for fixed bills: water, electricity, internet, credit card minimum.
  2. Use phone reminders 3 to 5 days before bills are due for amounts that vary monthly.
  3. Build an emergency fund — even a small one — to avoid missing payments in tight months. Understanding how to save money every month without complications can help you build this.
  4. Prioritize the credit card minimum in extreme situations: paying less than the total increases interest, but avoiding a late payment protects your score.

Remember: a single significant delay can take months to be “digested” by the system, especially if it’s recent.

Negotiate and settle pending debts

If there are overdue debts or negative marks against your name, settling them is a prerequisite for any real score progress. The good news is that there are accessible paths to do this.

  • Serasa Limpa Nome and Acordo Certo (from SPC) are free platforms where creditors offer special negotiation terms — sometimes with substantial discounts.
  • Desenrola Brasil, a federal government program launched in 2023 with continued actions in 2025 and 2026, also offered and may continue to offer facilitated conditions for renegotiating debts with banks and fintechs. Check the current status on the Ministry of Finance official portal.

Important: settling an old debt doesn’t immediately erase the negative history. The default record can remain for up to 5 years at the bureaus, according to the Consumer Protection Code (article 43). What changes is the status: from “pending” to “paid”, which is interpreted positively, but the score effect is gradual.

Use available credit intelligently

A common mistake is thinking that not using your credit card helps your score. Actually, having available credit and using it responsibly contributes to your score — the problem is excess.

The concept of credit utilization ratio is simple: if you have R$ 5,000 in credit limit and spend R$ 4,500, your utilization ratio is 90%. This signals excessive credit dependence and tends to weigh negatively.

General market recommendations suggest keeping utilization below 30% of available limit, but the most important thing is to understand the logic: using moderately and paying on time is the behavior the system values.

Other useful practices:

  • Request a credit increase when your history is already positive — this automatically reduces your utilization ratio, as long as spending doesn’t increase proportionally.
  • Avoid closing old cards without reason: this can reduce your total limit and shorten your credit history.

Activate and maintain the Positive Registry

As mentioned, the Positive Registry records your correctly made payments — water, electricity, phone, financing, and others. Since 2019, it became automatic for all CPFs, but it’s worth checking if your profile is active and complete.

You can check your status directly on the credit bureau portals (Serasa, Boa Vista, Quod) for free. The Central Bank also provides information about the system on its official website (bcb.gov.br).

The longer and more positive your Positive Registry history, the more “favorable data” the algorithm has to calculate your score. It’s a long-term construction, but it starts now.

Avoid behaviors that tank your score

Just as important as knowing what to do is understanding what not to do:

Behavior Score Impact
Paying bills late Very negative
Applying for credit in multiple places at once Negative (generates multiple inquiries)
Having your name marked negative without negotiating Very negative
Using almost 100% of your credit card limit Negative
Ignoring the Positive Registry Misses scoring opportunity
Closing old accounts unnecessarily Can reduce history

An important point about CPF inquiries: when you yourself check your score on the credit bureau portals, this is called a “soft” inquiry and does not impact your score. What affects your score are inquiries made by companies when they analyze your credit application — called “hard” inquiries.

How long does it take for your score to really go up?

This is where honesty becomes most necessary. There’s no fixed or guaranteed timeframe. The score is a dynamic model that updates based on accumulated behavior. In general:

  • Settling a negative mark can produce improvement in weeks, but the full effect takes months.
  • Building a positive history from zero usually takes 6 months to 2 years to produce significant results.
  • Maintaining on-time payments consistently is the factor with the greatest cumulative impact over time.

Be wary of any service or person promising to “increase your score in X days” in exchange for payment. Beyond often being ineffective, some of these practices can constitute fraud. Your score isn’t bought — it’s built.

Conclusion: score is the consequence of financial health

How to increase your credit score the right way - Conclusion: score is the consequence of financial health

Your credit score is not an end in itself. It’s, in practice, a reflection of your financial behavior over time. When you pay your bills on time, avoid overspending beyond your capacity, negotiate old debts, and use credit consciously, your score tends to go up — not like magic, but as a natural result of consistent choices.

If you’re still organizing your financial life, start with the basics: understand your income, your fixed and variable expenses, and build the habit of not spending more than you earn. That’s the foundation of any solid score.

Also remember that filing your income tax correctly is part of your financial life and can reflect on your relationship with institutions. If you need guidance, check out our step-by-step guide to filing your income tax in 2026.

A high score opens doors — better interest rates, easier approval, more negotiating power. But the best reason to care for it is simpler: it means you’re in control of your own financial life.
