How to Check Your Income Tax Refund Status

Every year, millions of Brazilians eagerly await their Income Tax refund — the money returned by the Federal Revenue Service when you’ve paid more tax than necessary throughout the year. However, between filing your return and seeing the amount credited to your account, there’s a process that few know well: tracking your refund. Knowing how to check it, understanding payment priorities, and knowing your rights can make a difference in planning your finances better.

The good news is that the Federal Revenue Service provides free and accessible tools for any taxpayer to monitor their refund status in real-time. You don’t need to hire anyone, pay for services, or call customer service. With a smartphone or computer and your CPF in hand, you can check everything. In this article, we’ll show you the complete step-by-step process, explain the payment schedule, clarify common doubts, and guide you on what to do if the refund doesn’t arrive as expected.

What is the Income Tax Refund?

Before discussing how to check it, it’s worth understanding what the refund is. When an employee has Income Tax withheld at the source by the employer throughout the year, or when a taxpayer makes advance payments (such as the carnê-leão quotas), this amount may be more than the tax actually owed after the final annual declaration calculation.

The difference between what was overpaid and what was actually due is the amount that the Federal Revenue Service returns to the taxpayer: the refund. In other words, it’s your own money being returned — it’s not a gift from the government, but rather a correction of an overpayment.

It’s also important to know that the refund is adjusted by the Selic rate — the basic interest rate of the Brazilian economy, defined by the Central Bank. This means that the longer the Federal Revenue Service takes to return the amount, the higher the adjustment applied will be. To check the current Selic rate, visit the official website of the Central Bank of Brazil.

The Refund Schedule: How the Queue Works

The Federal Revenue Service pays refunds in monthly batches, which generally start in May and go until December, totaling around seven batches per fiscal year. Taxpayers who file their returns earlier generally have priority in receiving — provided there are no pending issues.

Who has priority in receiving

The legislation establishes an order of priority for the payment of refunds. Currently, the priority is as follows:

  1. Taxpayers aged 80 or older
  2. Taxpayers between 60 and 79 years old
  3. Taxpayers with physical, mental disabilities, or serious illness
  4. Taxpayers whose primary source of income is teaching
  5. Taxpayers who used the pre-filled declaration and opted to receive the refund via Pix (CPF key)
  6. Taxpayers who only used the pre-filled declaration or only opted for Pix
  7. Other taxpayers, in order of declaration submission

Note: Priority rules may be adjusted each fiscal year. Always check the Federal Revenue Service’s website (gov.br/receitafederal) to confirm the current year’s rules.

How to Check Your Refund: Step by Step

There are three official ways to track your refund status. All are free.

Via the Federal Revenue Service website (computer or mobile)

  1. Access the official portal: gov.br/receitafederal
  2. In the menu, look for the section “My Income Tax” or use the internal search with the term “refund consultation”
  3. Click on “Check Refund”
  4. Select the fiscal year you wish to check (note: fiscal year 2026 refers to 2025 earnings)
  5. Enter your CPF and date of birth
  6. Click on “Check”
  7. The system will display the current status: processing, in payment queue, paid, or with pending issues

Via the “My Income Tax” app (mobile)

  1. Download the “My Income Tax” app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) — the app is official from the Federal Revenue Service
  2. Log in with your Gov.br account (silver or gold level) or enter CPF and date of birth
  3. Access the “Refund” tab
  4. Select the desired fiscal year
  5. View the status and payment forecast

Via your bank’s app

If you registered a bank account in the declaration, many banks directly display a notification in the app when the refund is credited. However, to confirm the official status, always use the Federal Revenue Service’s tools.

What the Consultation Statuses Mean

When checking, you may encounter different messages. Understanding each one avoids confusion and unnecessary worry:

  • “Processing”: your declaration is still being analyzed by the Federal Revenue Service. This is normal, especially in the first weeks after the submission deadline.
  • “Waiting in Queue”: your refund has been approved but is still waiting for the payment batch date.
  • “Paid”: the amount has already been transferred to the indicated account. If not received, check the registered bank details.
  • “Declaration in Review”: your declaration showed inconsistencies and is being analyzed more thoroughly. This suspends the refund payment until resolved.
  • “Not Found”: may indicate that the declaration has not yet been processed or there was an issue with submission.

What to Do If Your Declaration Falls into Review

The review process is a detailed analysis the Revenue performs when it identifies discrepancies in the declaration — such as earnings reported by the employer that don’t match what you declared, deductions with errors, or missing information.

If your refund is held in review, you have two main options:

  1. Wait for the official notice from the Federal Revenue Service, which will come through the portal or e-CAC (Virtual Service Center), explaining what needs to be corrected.
  2. Anticipate the correction by submitting a rectifying declaration before being notified. This tends to speed up resolution and can reduce or eliminate penalties.

Access e-CAC at cav.receita.fazenda.gov.br with Gov.br login to check details about pending issues in your declaration.

What If the Refund Doesn’t Reach the Indicated Account?

This is a relatively common problem. The most frequent causes are:

  • Closed bank account or incorrect details provided in the declaration
  • Salary account (which doesn’t accept third-party credits by default)
  • Third-party account (the refund can only be credited to the account of the CPF holder declared)

If the refund cannot be credited, the amount remains available for one year for withdrawal. In this case, you must personally go to a Banco do Brasil branch with identification and CPF, or access the BB portal (bb.com.br) to request credit rescheduling.

After this one-year period without withdrawal, a formal reissue request must be submitted directly to the Federal Revenue Service.

Financial Planning: What to Do with the Refund

Many people treat the refund as “extra” money and end up spending it unplanned. Remember that this amount is your money, which could have been used throughout the year if the tax hadn’t been over-withheld.

A balanced and educational approach suggests some priorities:

  • Pay off high-interest debts first — such as credit card or overdraft — as the cost of these debts tends to exceed any investment returns. For strategies in this regard, check our Guide to Getting Out of Debt with Little Money.
  • Build or strengthen your emergency fund, ideally covering three to six months of essential expenses.
  • Start or expand investments gradually and consciously. Even smaller amounts can be a good start — see how in the article How to Consistently Invest 100 Reais Monthly.

Conclusion: Track, Stay Informed, and Plan

How to Check Your Income Tax Refund Status - Conclusion: Track, Stay Informed, and Plan

Checking your Income Tax refund is simple, free, and doesn’t require intermediaries. The Federal Revenue Service’s tools were developed precisely so that taxpayers have autonomy and transparency in monitoring. The step-by-step is straightforward: access the official site or app, enter CPF and date of birth, choose the correct fiscal year, and see the status in seconds.

The most important thing is to stay informed about deadlines, schedules, and possible pending issues — and act quickly if your declaration is in review. Anticipating the resolution of inconsistencies is usually more efficient than waiting for a notice.

And when the money arrives, remember: planning is the best investment. Using the refund consciously can be a turning point in your financial health.
