MEI 2026: How It Works and How Much You Pay

If you work independently, provide services, sell products, or want to formalize an activity you already perform autonomously, you’ve probably already heard about MEI — Micro-Entrepreneur Individual. In 2026, this regime continues to be one of the most accessible gateways to formalization in Brazil, with simplified taxation and social security benefits that make a real difference in the pocket and security of those who work for themselves.

But, like any tax regime, MEI has specific rules, revenue limits, monthly obligations, and situations where it may not be the best option. Understanding exactly how it works and how much you pay avoids surprises with the tax authorities, late payment penalties, and even cancellation of registration due to omission of information.

In this article, we’ll walk through the MEI operation step by step in 2026: who can qualify, what the DAS values are (the monthly collection slip), what’s included and what’s not, and how to keep everything in order without complications.

What is MEI and Who Can Qualify

The Micro-Entrepreneur Individual is a legal entity category created to simplify the lives of self-employed workers and small entrepreneurs. Regulated by Complementary Law No. 128/2008 and managed by the Entrepreneur Portal (gov.br), MEI allows you to open a CNPJ for free, quickly, and without excessive bureaucracy.

To qualify as MEI in 2026, you need to meet some basic criteria:

  • Annual revenue of up to R$ 81,000.00 (current limit for general activities) or up to R$ 251,600.00 for truck driver MEI, a category with a differentiated limit by law
  • Perform one of the permitted activities listed in Annex XI of CGSN Resolution — not all occupations are eligible for MEI
  • Not be a partner, administrator or holder of another company
  • Have at most one employee hired, who must receive the minimum wage or the category minimum wage

> Attention: the R$ 81,000 limit equals an average monthly amount of R$ 6,750. If you exceed this ceiling by more than 20% in a calendar year, it will be mandatory to re-qualify as ME (Microenterprise) in the Simplified National System, with more complex tax implications.

The list of permitted activities is extensive — it includes hairdresser, electrician, seamstress, photographer, personal trainer, street vendor, among dozens of others — but there are restrictions. Professions regulated by federal councils (such as doctor, lawyer, and engineer) cannot be MEI. Always check the official list on the Entrepreneur Portal before registering.

How Much You Pay: MEI DAS in 2026

The heart of MEI taxation is the DAS — Simplified National System Collection Document, the monthly invoice that brings together all taxes in a single form. The amount is fixed and calculated based on a percentage of the minimum wage in effect, plus fixed ISS and/or ICMS rates according to the activity.

In 2026, the national minimum wage is R$ 1,518.00 (value established by Decree No. 12,302/2024 with INPC adjustment for 2025, and updated for 2026 according to current legislation — confirm the current value on the Federal Government website, as adjustments may occur throughout the year).

The DAS is composed of:

  • 5% of the minimum wage → INSS contribution (social security)
  • R$ 1.00 → ISS (Tax on Services), if the activity is a service provision
  • R$ 5.00 → ICMS (Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services), if the activity involves commerce or industry

The table below summarizes the approximate values according to the type of activity:

Type of Activity INSS Contribution (5% of minimum wage) ISS ICMS Monthly Total
Service provision ~R$ 75.90 R$ 1.00 — ~R$ 76.90
Commerce / Industry ~R$ 75.90 — R$ 5.00 ~R$ 80.90
Services + Commerce ~R$ 75.90 R$ 1.00 R$ 5.00 ~R$ 81.90

> INSS values vary according to the minimum wage of the year. Consult the DAS generated on the Entrepreneur Portal for the exact value of the current month, as it automatically applies the correct rate.

What’s Included in the DAS Payment

Paying the DAS monthly on time guarantees MEI access to INSS social security benefits, which represents real financial protection for those who work for themselves. Covered benefits include:

  • Retirement by age (with contribution waiting period)
  • Sick leave benefit (after 12 months of continuous contribution, as a rule)
  • Maternity benefit
  • Death pension (for dependents)
  • Retirement by disability

It’s important to understand, however, that the MEI contribution equals 5% of the minimum wage, which means that retirement by contribution time is not available in this modality. To have the right to this modality or a retirement calculated on a higher salary, it would be necessary to make additional contributions — something that deserves evaluation with a social security planning specialist.

Obligations Beyond DAS: What You Need to Do Every Month and Every Year

Paying the DAS is the most well-known obligation, but it’s not the only one. MEI also needs to fulfill other responsibilities to avoid problems with the Federal Tax Authority:

Monthly Obligations

  1. Issue invoices for legal entities (companies) that hire your services or buy your products — for individuals, invoicing is optional but recommended
  2. Keep receipts of income (issued invoices, receipts, statements) for 5 years
  3. Pay the DAS by the 20th of each month — late payment generates a fine of 0.33% per day, limited to 20%, plus interest based on the Selic rate

Annual Obligation

  • Annual Declaration of the Simplified National System for MEI (DASN-SIMEI): must be submitted by May 31st each year, reporting the gross revenue of the previous year. Submission is free and done through the Simplified National System Portal. Non-submission results in a minimum fine of R$ 50.00 and can lead to CNPJ blocking.

Advantages and Disadvantages of MEI: A Balanced View

No financial or business decision is free from pros and cons. See an honest overview:

Advantages:

  • Free registration and 100% digital process
  • Unified taxes in a single monthly invoice of reduced value
  • Access to INSS social security benefits
  • Ability to issue invoices, which opens doors with business clients
  • Exemption from IRPJ, PIS, Cofins, CSLL, and IPI (within limits)
  • Ease in opening a business bank account and requesting credit

Disadvantages and Points of Attention:

  • Restricted Revenue Limit: exceeding R$ 81,000 annually forces re-qualification, with increased tax burden
  • Only One Employee Allowed: those who need to grow can quickly “exceed” this limitation
  • Retirement Calculated by Minimum Wage: those who contribute only as MEI will have retirement linked to the national floor
  • Restricted Activities: not all segments are eligible
  • Personal Liability for Debts: despite the CNPJ, MEI doesn’t have full patrimonial separation like limited companies

How to Open MEI: Step by Step

If you don’t yet have a registration and want to formalize, the process is simple:

  1. Access the Entrepreneur Portal at gov.br/mei
  2. Click on “I Want to Be MEI”
  3. Log in with your Gov.br account (silver or gold level)
  4. Fill in personal data, address, and intended activity(ies)
  5. Confirm and wait for CNPJ issuance, which is usually immediate
  6. Keep the Certificate of Condition of Micro-Entrepreneur Individual (CCMEI), which has provisional license validity
  7. Check if your city requires an additional operating license for your activity

The process has no cost, doesn’t require an accountant, and can be done in less than 10 minutes.

Practical Tips to Keep MEI Up to Date

  • Automate DAS Payment: set up automatic debit through the PGMEI app or online banking to avoid oversights
  • Separate a PJ bank account from your personal finances: this makes it easier to control revenue and avoids confusion when making the annual declaration — and it’s an important first step in organizing your financial life, something we address in detail in the article from debt to first investment: where to start
  • Monitor your Revenue Monthly: record all income and compare with the annual limit proportional to the month to avoid surprises
  • Keep Notes and Receipts: in case of an audit, you’ll need to prove the declared income
  • Pay Attention to Dates: DAS is due on the 20th and DASN-SIMEI is due on May 31st

Conclusion

MEI 2026: How It Works and How Much You Pay - Conclusion

MEI continues to be, in 2026, one of the most effective formalization tools for self-employed workers and small entrepreneurs in Brazil. With an accessible monthly contribution, real social security benefits, and reduced bureaucracy, it represents a concrete step toward financial and professional security.

However, formalizing is just the beginning. Understanding your obligations, controlling revenue within limits, and keeping declarations up to date are fundamental parts of responsible management. MEI is not a “maybe” — it’s a decision with real tax and social security consequences that deserve attention and planning.

If you have doubts about the correct classification for your activity or about how MEI relates to your personal tax situation, consult an accountant or qualified professional. The cost of this guidance is usually much less than correcting mistakes later.
