Choosing a Fee-Free Digital Account in 2026: Your Ultimate Guide

If you’re still paying monthly fees to maintain a bank account, it might be time to reconsider. The market for free digital accounts has grown significantly in Brazil over the past few years, and by 2026, consumers have a wide range of options that charge zero maintenance fees—while offering services that, a decade ago, were exclusive to expensive “premium” packages.

However, “fee-free” doesn’t necessarily mean “cost-free” or “without catches.” Understanding the details behind each offer is crucial for making an informed decision. After all, banks and fintechs are businesses and need revenue to operate: if they don’t charge for the account, they usually monetize through other products like credit cards, investments, or insurance.

In this article, you’ll learn how free digital accounts work, what sets them apart, what criteria to use for comparison, and how to protect your money regardless of the institution you choose.

What is a Fee-Free Digital Account?

A payment account or checking account “without fees” is one where the financial institution does not charge a monthly maintenance fee. This model is regulated and supervised by the Central Bank of Brazil (Bacen), which sets minimum transparency and consumer protection rules.

It’s important to distinguish between two main types:

  • Payment Account: Offered by fintechs and payment institutions authorized by Bacen. It allows you to receive, store, and transfer money but does not directly offer credit.
  • Digital Checking Account: Offered by multiple or commercial banks with digital operations. It functions like a traditional checking account but without the need for a physical branch.

In both cases, the absence of a maintenance fee is real—but always read the contract and fee schedule, which institutions are required to make publicly available, to check for charges on individual services, like issuing more bills than a set limit or withdrawals from third-party ATMs.

What the Central Bank Guarantees to Consumers

Bacen establishes important rules that protect those using digital accounts. Among the most relevant points:

  • Resolution BCB No. 96/2021 and subsequent updates: Institutions are required to offer a package of essential free services, such as transfers via Pix (which is free for individuals by Bacen’s determination), balance and statement inquiries, and a virtual debit card.
  • Open Finance: The Brazilian open finance system, operational since 2021 and continuously expanding, allows you to share your data between institutions and transfer your financial history, making it easier to switch banks without losing information.
  • Salary Portability: You have the right to receive your salary in any account of your choice, regardless of your employer’s bank. Simply request portability—it is free and mandatory by law.

Before opening an account, check if the institution is authorized by the Central Bank. This can be done directly on Bacen’s official website (bcb.gov.br), in the authorized institutions section.

Criteria for Comparing Free Digital Accounts

With so many options available, comparison can seem difficult. Use the criteria below as a guide:

1. FGC Coverage

The Credit Guarantee Fund (FGC) protects deposits in associated banks and financial institutions in case of bankruptcy or intervention, up to R$ 250,000 per CPF per institution (with a global limit of R$ 1 million every four years, according to current rules—check fgc.org.br for current values).

Note: Payment accounts at pure payment institutions are not covered by the FGC. If your account is with a fintech that is not a bank, the money sitting in the checking account does not have this protection. For amounts you keep as a reserve, this is a relevant factor.

2. Automatic Balance Yield

Some accounts offer automatic yield on the idle balance, usually linked to the CDI (Interbank Deposit Certificate), which closely follows the Selic rate set by the Monetary Policy Committee (Copom). The percentage of CDI that each account pays varies—and values change according to market conditions and each institution’s policies.

Before choosing, check:

  • What percentage of CDI is offered (e.g., 100% of CDI, 102% of CDI)?
  • Is the yield on the free balance or only on a minimum amount?
  • Is there Income Tax on this yield? (For fixed income investments, the IR rate follows the Federal Revenue’s regressive table—from 22.5% for terms up to 180 days to 15% for terms over 720 days. Confirm current rates at receita.fazenda.gov.br.)

To better understand how CDI-linked yield works, read about fixed income: what it is and how it works for you.

3. Included Services at No Cost

Check if the following are included without charge:

  • Transfers via Pix (mandatorily free for individuals)
  • TED and DOC (less used today but still relevant)
  • Bill issuance (how many per month?)
  • Physical and virtual card
  • Withdrawals (in which networks and how many per month?)
  • Customer service (chat, phone, response time)

4. Product Ecosystem

Free accounts are often part of a larger ecosystem: credit card, insurance, investments, personal credit. Evaluate whether these complementary products are of quality and if you really need them—without being swayed by offers that seem advantageous but generate future costs.

If you use a credit card linked to the account, read our guide on how to use credit cards without falling into debt to avoid common pitfalls.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Fee-Free Digital Accounts

Aspect Advantages Disadvantages / Points to Note
Cost Zero monthly fee There may be charges for individual services
Opening 100% online, fast Requires digitized documents and a selfie
Free Pix Yes, by Bacen’s determination —
Balance Yield Some accounts offer automatic yield Subject to IR; CDI percentage varies
FGC Protection Yes, if it’s an associated bank Pure payment fintechs don’t have FGC coverage
Customer Service Usually agile via app/chat No physical branch; may be limited for complex situations
Credit Easier access through digital history Interest rates vary greatly; compare before contracting

How to Open a Digital Account: Step by Step

  1. Research available options and check if the institution is authorized on the Central Bank’s website.
  2. Download the institution’s official app (confirm the developer in the store—scammers create fake apps).
  3. Prepare the necessary documents: ID or driver’s license, CPF, and recent proof of residence.
  4. Register and validate your identity (usually involves document photos and facial recognition).
  5. Read the contract and fee schedule before confirming the opening—look for the “fees and services” document that every authorized institution is required to publish.
  6. Activate Pix by registering your keys (CPF, email, phone, or random key).
  7. Request salary portability if necessary, directly through the app or your employer’s HR.

Security: What You Need to Know

Digital accounts are secure when you adopt good practices. The main risks are not in the fintechs’ systems, but in user behavior:

  • Never share passwords, tokens, or authentication codes—no legitimate institution asks for this by phone or message.
  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) whenever available.
  • Monitor your statement regularly—Pix allows quick transactions, and any suspicious activity should be reported immediately.
  • In case of fraud, contact the institution through the official channel and file a police report. The Central Bank has a complaints channel (consumidor.gov.br and Bacen’s own site) if the institution does not resolve the issue.

Conclusion: The Right Choice Depends on Your Profile

Fee-Free Digital Account in 2026: Which to Choose? - Conclusion: The Right Choice Depends on Your Profile

There is no “best digital account for everyone.” The ideal choice depends on how you use money daily: whether you need frequent ATM withdrawals, want automatic yield on your balance, or plan to use credit or investments through the same platform.

The most important thing is to make an informed decision: confirm the institution’s authorization with Bacen, understand the FGC coverage (or lack thereof), read the fee schedule, and don’t be swayed solely by “zero cost” marketing. A no-monthly-fee account that leads you to take out expensive credit or unnecessary insurance can cost much more than a paid account.

Use available tools—open finance, salary portability, and free Pix—to your advantage. And reassess your account at least once a year: the market changes, offers evolve, and your needs do too.
